Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

256px-Roux-En-Y_Part_2.png

The Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass is a type of weight-loss surgery that creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects the new pouch directly to a lower segment of the small intestine.  After the gastric bypass, food will go into the pouch and into this part of the small intestine thereby bypassing the stomach, duodenum (first part of the small intestine), and some of the jejunum (second part of the small intestine).  The small intestine is then re-connected farther along the intestinal tract to allow mixing of swallowed food and the digestive enzymes where the two segments of intestine meet. The new stomach pouch restricts the amount of food intake.  The bypassed segment reduces the absorption of nutrients.
