Sleeve Gastrectomy

sleeve.png

The sleeve gastrectomy, also called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a weight loss surgery that removes a big portion of the stomach.  During the sleeve gastrectomy, about 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller and tubular stomach about the size and shape of a banana which is the “sleeve”.  The smaller stomach restricts the amount of food you are able to consume leading to less caloric intake at each meal.  The portion of stomach removed also produces a hormone that impacts hunger control which is associated with a decreased appetite.  The result of the sleeve gastrectomy is weight loss and can improve the medical conditions associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.
